- CFA Institute runs three live scholarships in 2026: the Access Scholarship, the Student Scholarship and the Professor Scholarship.
- The Access Scholarship cuts the exam registration fee to USD 400 for awards made from 4 March 2026, under the Premium package that includes the Practice Pack.
- The Student Scholarship cuts the same fee to USD 600, but only for students at a university in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program.
- The Women’s Scholarship has been discontinued. There is no 2026 window for it.
- You cannot apply while registered for an exam or while waiting for results. This single rule disqualifies more Indian applicants than any other.
- Access windows for 2026: 12 Aug to 1 Sep (May 2027 exam) and 3 Nov to 23 Nov (August 2027 exam).

- Frequently Asked Questions
The CFA Program is one of the most respected investment credentials in the world, and one of the most expensive relative to Indian salaries. Between the one-time enrollment fee and three separate exam registrations, a candidate who clears all three levels on the first attempt is still looking at a total outlay in the region of USD 3,520 to USD 4,600, before study materials, coaching or local taxes. For a fresh commerce graduate in Mumbai or a two-year analyst at a mid-tier firm, that is not a rounding error. It is a genuine barrier.
CFA Institute knows this, which is why it runs a scholarship programme. What most Indian candidates get wrong is not whether scholarships exist, but which ones still exist, who they are actually meant for, and the narrow, unforgiving windows in which you can apply. The rules changed materially in 2025 and again in March 2026. A guide written two years ago will now give you the wrong number, the wrong deadline and, in one case, point you at a scholarship that no longer exists.
This guide is current as of July 2026. It covers every live CFA scholarship, the exact eligibility rules, the 2026 application windows, and the disqualification traps that quietly sink a large share of Indian applications. If you are still deciding between qualifications, our comparison of whether the CFA is worth it in India is a sensible place to start before you think about funding it. And if you want to talk it through with a person rather than a page, FPA Edutech has been guiding CFA candidates through exactly this process for over fifteen years.
1. What Is a CFA Scholarship?
A CFA scholarship is a fee reduction, not a cash grant. This is the first thing to internalise, because the word “scholarship” leads a lot of candidates to expect a cheque. No money changes hands. Instead, when you log in to register for your exam, a discounted price appears automatically at checkout.
Specifically, a CFA Institute scholarship reduces the exam registration fee for one exam cycle. It does not reduce the cost of coaching, it does not cover your Level I study resources beyond what the registration package includes, and it does not follow you across levels. Each scholarship is tied to one specific exam window. If you win a scholarship for the May sitting and then decide to sit in August instead, the scholarship does not travel with you.
The scholarships are administered directly by CFA Institute (and, for the Student Scholarship, by your university), and every award decision is final. There is no appeals process, no waitlist and no negotiation.
The most important sentence in this article: you are not eligible to apply for any CFA scholarship if you are currently registered for an exam, or if you have sat an exam and are waiting for your result. Applications submitted in either state are rejected outright. Plan your scholarship application before you register, never after.
2. Why CFA Scholarships Matter So Much in India
The CFA charter is dollar-priced and Indian salaries are rupee-denominated. That single mismatch does more to shape CFA access in India than any other factor.
Consider the arithmetic. According to the official CFA exam dates and fees page, standard exam registration starts at roughly USD 1,140 per level. Add the one-time enrollment fee, add three levels, add the very real possibility of a retake (our breakdown of the CFA pass rate explains why retakes are normal rather than shameful), and the true cost of the charter for a typical Indian candidate frequently exceeds four lakh rupees before a single hour of coaching is paid for.
Against that, an Access Scholarship that brings a registration down to USD 400 is not a nice-to-have discount. On a three-level journey it can reduce the exam-fee component by well over half. For a candidate who is self-funding while working an entry-level role, it can be the difference between attempting the charter and postponing it indefinitely.
Perspective on the payoff: total CFA Program exam fees across all three levels run from USD 3,520 to USD 4,600 depending on whether you register early or standard. Our analysis of CFA salaries in India across levels shows the credential typically repays that outlay well inside the first few years. A scholarship simply shortens the payback period.
There is a second, less discussed reason scholarships matter here. India is one of the largest CFA candidate markets in the world, which means Indian applicants are competing in a global pool where financial-need documentation from a middle-income country has to be assessed against applicants from very different economic contexts. Understanding what CFA Institute is actually evaluating (covered in section 9) meaningfully improves your odds.
3. Types of CFA Scholarships Available in 2026
As of July 2026 there are three CFA Institute scholarships open for application. Any list you see with four, five or six entries is out of date.
| Scholarship | Who it is for | Exam registration fee | Application window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access Scholarship | Anyone who cannot comfortably afford full programme fees. Financial need is the key criterion. | Reduced to USD 400 (Premium package, includes Practice Pack) for awards from 4 March 2026 | Four windows a year, one per exam cycle. Roughly three weeks each. |
| Student Scholarship | Students enrolled at a university in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. | Reduced to USD 600 (Premium package, includes Practice Pack) | Open 1 September to 15 July each programme year. |
| Professor Scholarship | Full-time professors, administrators and department heads at qualified institutions who teach a minimum credit load. | Reduced registration fee (confirmed in award email) | Rolling, per CFA Institute programme rules. |
| Discontinued. Eliminated by CFA Institute in 2025. | Not applicable | No window in 2026 or beyond. |
Every one of these applies to Levels I, II and III, subject to which levels are offered in the exam window you are applying against. None of them can be stacked. You get one scholarship per exam registration, full stop.

4. The Access Scholarship: Award, Eligibility and 2026 Deadlines
The Access Scholarship is the one that matters most to Indian candidates, because it is the only route that does not depend on where you study or who employs you. It is open to anyone who meets the CFA Program entry requirements and can demonstrate that the full fees present a genuine financial difficulty.
What you actually get
For scholarships awarded on or after 4 March 2026, the Access Scholarship reduces the CFA Program exam registration fee to USD 400 under the Premium registration package. Premium matters: it bundles the Practice Pack, which candidates otherwise buy separately. Awards made before 4 March 2026 do not include Practice Pack access, and CFA Institute has confirmed no exceptions will be made on that point. Applicable local taxes are added on top of the USD 400 at checkout.
The 2026 and 2027 application windows
The Access Scholarship runs four windows a year, each tied to a specific exam sitting. Miss the window and there is no late route in.
| Target exam | Levels | Window opens | Window closes | Decision date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 2027 | I and II | 12 August 2026 | 1 September 2026 | 25 September 2026 |
| August 2027 | I, II and III | 3 November 2026 | 23 November 2026 | 18 December 2026 |
| November 2027 | I and II | 9 February 2027 | 2 March 2027 | 26 March 2027 |
| February 2027 | I and III | Closed (25 May 2026) | Closed | 19 June 2026 |
If you are reading this in mid-2026: the next Access window opens on 12 August 2026 for the May 2027 exam, and closes on 1 September 2026. That is roughly a three-week runway. Diarise it now, because the window has already closed by the time most candidates think to look.
How the decision is made
Financial need is the stated key consideration. Applications are reviewed and awarded by CFA Institute, and all decisions are final. Applicants are notified by email approximately four weeks after the window closes, which is why the decision dates in the table sit a month behind the closing dates.
One warning that carries real consequences: providing knowingly false or misleading information on an Access Scholarship application is a violation of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. A suspect application can trigger a Professional Conduct Program investigation, and sanctions can include suspension or prohibition from the CFA Program entirely. Understating your income to improve your odds is not a clever tactic. It is a career risk.
5. The Student Scholarship: University Affiliation Explained
The Student Scholarship reduces the exam registration fee to USD 600 under the Premium package for awards from 4 March 2026. It is a smaller discount than Access, but it is considerably easier to win if you qualify, because the assessment is not need-based and the pool is limited to one university’s students.
The catch is the qualifying condition. You must be a student at a university enrolled in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. This is the single point where most Indian applicants fall down, because they assume any recognised university counts. It does not. Affiliation is something a university actively applies for, and a large number of Indian colleges are not in the programme.
Three things Indian students get wrong here
- You do not need to be in an affiliated degree programme. You only need to be a student at an affiliated university. If your institution is affiliated, a student in any department can apply.
- Your university decides, not CFA Institute. Applications are reviewed and awarded by the university throughout the programme year, not against a specific exam cycle. This means the internal process (and the internal competition) varies enormously by institution. Ask your placement cell or finance department who administers it.
- The window is long, but the awards are not unlimited. Applications run from 1 September through 15 July. Applying in September rather than June is materially better, because universities allocate through the year.
The Student Scholarship is a strong argument for factoring CFA affiliation into your undergraduate choice. FPA’s integrated and main course pathways are designed around exactly this kind of planning, so that the qualification and the degree reinforce each other rather than competing for your time.
Not sure if you qualify for a CFA scholarship?
Our counsellors have walked hundreds of Indian candidates through the Access and Student applications, including the financial-need documentation that trips most people up. One free conversation is usually enough to know where you stand.
6. The Professor Scholarship and Society-Level Support
The Professor Scholarship is aimed at full-time college and university professors, administrators and department heads who teach a minimum number of credit hours at qualified institutions. In India it is most relevant to faculty at business schools and commerce colleges who want the charter to strengthen their teaching credentials, and to department heads building a finance curriculum.
The same universal disqualifier applies: you cannot be currently registered for an exam or awaiting a result. Full rules are set out in the CFA Institute role-based scholarship rules document, and award benefits are confirmed in the individual award email rather than published as a single headline number.
Local CFA societies
Beyond the three CFA Institute scholarships, individual CFA societies around the world occasionally run their own candidate scholarships and awards. These are separate from the CFA Institute programme, are typically small in number, and vary year to year. They are worth a look, but they should never be your primary plan. Treat the Access Scholarship as your main route and anything local as a bonus.

7. What Happened to the CFA Women’s Scholarship?
It is gone. CFA Institute eliminated the Women’s Scholarship in 2025, and there is no application window for it in 2026.
This matters because the Women’s Scholarship is still widely referenced across Indian coaching sites, forums and YouTube videos that have not been updated. Candidates plan around it, wait for a window that will never open, and miss the Access deadline in the meantime. If you are a woman candidate looking for CFA funding in 2026, your routes are the Access Scholarship and, if you are at an affiliated university, the Student Scholarship. There is no separate gender-based track.
Do not lose a cycle to outdated advice. Before you rely on any scholarship information about the CFA Program, check the date it was published and cross-reference it against the official CFA Institute scholarships page. The rules have changed twice in eighteen months.
8. CFA Scholarship Eligibility: Who Can and Cannot Apply
Eligibility for CFA scholarships is best understood as two layers. First, you must meet the entry requirements for the CFA Program itself. Second, you must not fall into any of the scholarship-specific disqualifications.
Layer one: CFA Program eligibility
You must satisfy the standard CFA Program registration criteria, which broadly means holding a bachelor’s degree, being within two years of completing one, or having the required combination of work and education experience. Our detailed guide on CFA eligibility criteria walks through exactly how this applies to Indian degree structures, including B.Com, BAF, BMS and BBA pathways.
Layer two: scholarship disqualifications
You are not eligible to apply for any CFA Institute scholarship if any of the following is true:
- You are currently registered for an exam, including while your pass or fail result is pending.
- You were granted a scholarship after 1 September 2024 and did not use it by registering and sitting for your exam.
- You were granted scholarships twice after 1 September 2024 and did not pass after your second attempt at the same level (applicable to scholarship registrations).
- You already have another scholarship application open. Only one can be live at a time.
That second and third rule are worth dwelling on. CFA Institute is explicitly penalising candidates who take an award and then do not turn up. If you win a scholarship and let it lapse, you are not just losing that discount, you are removing yourself from the pool for future ones. Only apply for a cycle you are genuinely confident you will sit.
There is no cap on how many times you may apply across your CFA journey, and CFA Institute does not track application counts against you. But you must wait for a decision on one application before opening another, and if awarded, you must register, sit and receive your result before applying again.
9. How to Apply for a CFA Scholarship: Step by Step
The mechanics are straightforward. The discipline around timing is what separates successful applicants from the rest.
Step 1: Confirm you are not disqualified
Before anything else, check that you are not currently registered for an exam and not awaiting a result. If you are, stop. Wait for your result, then apply in the next window.
Step 2: Pick your target exam cycle honestly
The scholarship is valid for one exam cycle only. Do not apply for the nearest window out of impatience. Apply for the window you can realistically be ready for, given that Level I alone demands roughly 300 hours of study. If you are working full-time, read our guide on managing CFA studies alongside work in Mumbai before you commit to a date.
Step 3: Prepare your documentation
For the Access Scholarship, financial need is the key consideration, so be ready to speak accurately about your income, employment status and financial circumstances. For the Student Scholarship, you will need confirmation of enrolment at your affiliated university. Documentation requirements can include academic records and a personal statement.
Step 4: Apply through the official portal, on a computer
Applications are submitted through the CFA Institute SmartSimple portal, linked from the Access Scholarship page and the Student Scholarship page. A detail that catches people out every cycle: the application cannot be completed on a mobile device. You must log in from a computer. Given how many Indian candidates work primarily from a phone, this alone causes missed deadlines.
Step 5: Confirm receipt, then start studying
You will receive a confirmation email after submitting. If it does not arrive, contact CFA Institute support rather than assuming it went through. Then, critically, begin your preparation immediately. Decisions take around four weeks after the window closes. If you wait for the result before opening a book, you have surrendered a month of study time you will not get back. Our breakdown of how to pass the CFA exam on the first attempt makes the case for front-loading that time.
Step 6: Register once the award lands
If you are awarded, the discounted fee appears automatically at checkout when you register. For Student Scholarships, allow five to eight business days from the award notification for the discount to become active. Do not register before it does, because you will not be refunded the difference.
If you are not awarded: Student Scholarship applicants who are declined may still be eligible for the early registration price on exam cycles where the early deadline has passed, provided the registration window is still open. Wait for the official decision notification before registering, or you forfeit that fallback.
10. Who Applies for CFA Scholarships in India?
CFA scholarship applicants in India are not a single profile. Understanding which group you belong to helps you choose the right scholarship and the right exam cycle.
Final-year and recent commerce graduates
- The largest group by volume. Typically targeting Level I, often applying for Access while still job-hunting. If your college is CFA-affiliated, the Student Scholarship is the better first move. Start with the Level I syllabus and what to study first.
- Many are still weighing options. MBA vs CFA and CFP® vs CFA are the two comparisons worth reading before you spend a rupee.
Working analysts in banking, research and asset management
- Usually self-funding, usually at Level I or II, usually time-poor. Access is the only realistic route. See jobs you can target with a CFA and the seven main CFA career paths.
- Considering the operations side of the industry instead? Our Investment Banking Operations Certificate is a faster, cheaper entry point.
Chartered Accountants and CA finalists adding the charter
- A well-established Indian pathway. Read why CAs pursue the CFA and our honest comparison of whether the CFA is tougher than CA.
- Often the strongest scholarship applicants on merit, and often the least likely to apply because they assume they will not qualify on need.
Career switchers from engineering, IT and non-finance backgrounds
- Frequently the best fit for Access on financial-need grounds, particularly during a career transition. See ten reasons to pursue a CFA career.
- If the CFA timeline feels too long, our CMA (US), ACCA and CFP® tracks are shorter routes into finance and accounting.
11. Related Reading on the CFA Programme
Before you apply: understanding the CFA
- Three CFA scholarships are live in 2026: Access, Student and Professor. The Women’s Scholarship no longer exists.
- Access reduces the exam registration fee to USD 400; Student reduces it to USD 600. Both now include the Practice Pack under the Premium package for awards from 4 March 2026.
- You cannot apply while registered for an exam or while awaiting a result. This is the number one disqualifier.
- The next Access window opens 12 August 2026 and closes 1 September 2026, for the May 2027 exam.
- The Student Scholarship requires enrolment at a university in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. Verify this before you plan around it.
- Scholarships cannot be stacked, cannot be extended, and cannot be transferred to a different exam window.
- Winning an award and then not sitting the exam makes you ineligible for future scholarships. Apply only for a cycle you will genuinely attempt.
- Start studying the day you apply, not the day you are approved. Decisions take about four weeks.
12. Frequently Asked Questions
Can Indian students apply for CFA scholarships?
Yes. CFA Institute scholarships are global. Indian candidates are eligible for the Access Scholarship, and for the Student Scholarship if they study at a university enrolled in the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. There is no India-specific quota and no separate India application form. You apply through the same global portal as everyone else.
How much does the CFA Access Scholarship actually save you?
For scholarships awarded from 4 March 2026, the Access Scholarship reduces the CFA Program exam registration fee to USD 400 under the Premium registration package, which includes the Practice Pack. Since standard registration starts at roughly USD 1,140 per exam, the saving per sitting is substantial. Applicable local taxes are added at checkout.
Is the CFA Women’s Scholarship still available in 2026?
No. CFA Institute discontinued the Women’s Scholarship in 2025 and there is no application window for it in 2026. A great deal of outdated content online still references it. Women candidates should apply through the Access Scholarship, or the Student Scholarship if they are at an affiliated university.
Can I apply if I have already registered for the exam?
No. You are not eligible while you are registered for an exam, and you are not eligible while you are waiting for your result to be released. Applications submitted in either state will be rejected. Apply before you register, never after.
When do CFA scholarship applications open in 2026?
The Access Scholarship runs four windows a year, one per exam cycle. For the May 2027 exam it opens 12 August 2026 and closes 1 September 2026. For the August 2027 exam it opens 3 November 2026 and closes 23 November 2026. The Student Scholarship accepts applications from 1 September through 15 July each programme year.
Can I apply for more than one CFA scholarship at a time?
No. Only one application can be open at a time, and only one scholarship can be used per exam registration. You must receive a decision on your current application before applying for another, and if you are awarded one, you must register, sit the exam and receive your result before applying again.
Does the scholarship cover the one-time CFA enrollment fee?
The published benefit is a reduced exam registration fee. The treatment of the one-time enrollment fee is confirmed in your individual award email, so read it carefully before you register. Budget for the enrollment fee unless your award email explicitly says otherwise.
What happens if I win a scholarship and then do not use it?
If you fail to register, fail to schedule, or do not appear for the exam, you become ineligible for future CFA Institute scholarships. Awards are non-transferable and cannot be extended past their stated expiry date. This is a real penalty, so only apply for a cycle you are confident you will sit.
Do employers know I used a scholarship?
No. A scholarship only reduces the fee you pay. The exam, the curriculum, the pass standard and the charter you earn are identical to any other candidate’s. Nothing on your credential, transcript or membership record indicates that you registered with a scholarship.
Should I wait for the scholarship decision before starting to study?
No, and this is one of the most costly mistakes candidates make. Decisions arrive roughly four weeks after a window closes, and Level I alone demands around 300 hours of preparation. Begin studying the day you submit your application. If the award comes through, you are ahead. If it does not, you have not lost a month of your exam timeline.
